Olympic,\u00a0<\/span><\/b>W<\/span><\/b>orld and European\u00a0<\/span><\/b>C<\/span><\/b>hampions will be coming to Berlin’s Mercedes-Benz Arena tomorrow, Friday, February 23, for the ISTAF INDOOR. 12,000 fans are expected to attend the world’s biggest indoor athletics meeting. They will experience an evening full of highlights with numerous crowd favorites, exciting duels, fast premieres – and as a spectacular encore, the unique discus duel. For some athletes, the ISTAF INDOOR is the dress rehearsal for the eagerly awaited\u00a0World Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 2024\u00a0<\/b>(March 1 to 3, 2024), but for many top athletes, the start in Berlin is the last\u00a0<\/span>stop<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>their<\/span>\u00a0indoor season before the intensive preparation for the “super summer” begins with the European Championships in Rome and the Olympic Games in Paris. It is also the “indoor final” for world-class long jumper\u00a0<\/span>Malaika Mihambo<\/span><\/b>, who<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>won the German Indoor Championships last weekend with 6.93 meters<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0“I’m getting better and better at the competitions. Malaika Mihambo jumped her personal indoor record of 7.07 meters in the Mercedes-Benz Arena in 2020.\u00a0<\/span>Her competitors<\/span>\u00a0include\u00a0<\/span>Mikaelle Assani\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(Germany), currently ranked number four in the world, and\u00a0<\/span>Larissa Iapichino\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(Italy),\u00a0<\/span>silver medalist<\/span>\u00a0at the 2023 European Indoor Championships.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

World<\/span><\/b>–<\/span><\/b>class in eight disciplines<\/span><\/b><\/b><\/p>\n

Eight exciting disciplines are on the program at the ISTAF INDOOR (60 meters F\/M, 60 meters Para<\/span>lympics<\/span>\u00a0M, 60 meters hurdles F\/M, long jump F, pole vault M, discus duel M-F).\u00a0<\/span>I<\/span>n the men’s 60 meters<\/span>, European I<\/span>ndoor\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>hampion\u00a0<\/span>Samuele Ceccarelli\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(Italy)\u00a0<\/span>will race against\u00a0Omar McLeod\u00a0<\/b><\/span>(Jamaica)<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>the 2016 Olympic hurdles\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>hampion\u00a0<\/span>from<\/span>\u00a0Rio<\/span>, who wants to<\/span>\u00a0kick off the Olympic season in Berlin with the 60 meters<\/span>\u00a0“flat”.\u00a0Ronnie Baker<\/b><\/span>\u00a0is in<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>very strong\u00a0<\/span>condition<\/span>. The US star ran a super-fast 6.51 seconds a few days ago.\u00a0<\/span>Zaynab Dosso\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(Italy), currently the third-fastest 60-meter sprinter in the world, the British European\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>hampion and last year’s winner\u00a0<\/span>Daryll Neita\u00a0<\/span><\/b>and the Jamaican hurdles record holder\u00a0Britany Anderson\u00a0<\/b>will be competing in the women’s race. The hurdles will also be extremely fast. The favorite in the men’s race is\u00a0<\/span>Daniel Roberts<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(USA). With 7.93 seconds, the\u00a0<\/span>bronze medallist at the World Championships is one of the absolute world<\/span>-class athletes\u00a0<\/span>and is one of only 14 hurdlers in the world to have ever run under 7.40 seconds. In the pole vault, Philippine six-meter jumper and World Championship silver medallist\u00a0<\/span>Ernest John Obiena\u00a0<\/span><\/b>will be\u00a0<\/span>trying to\u00a0<\/b><\/span>repeat his triumph from 2021. His star rose in Berlin back then. Ernest Obiena is competing in only his second competition\u00a0<\/span>this\u00a0<\/span>year at the ISTAF INDOOR. But\u00a0<\/span>he<\/span>\u00a0can also deliver top performances without much competition experience. This is shown by his victory with a meeting record of 5.83 meters on Tuesday evening in Osijek (Croatia) as well as a total of 47 competitions with\u00a0<\/span>jumps over<\/span>\u00a0at least 5.80 meters.<\/span><\/p>\n

The international stars will be challenged by Germany’s best. Seven newly crowned German\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>hampions alone will be competing in Berlin: in addition to\u00a0<\/span>Malaika Mihambo\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(long jump),\u00a0<\/span>Rebekka Haase\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(60 m), local hero\u00a0<\/span>Skadi Schier\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(4×200 m German I<\/span>ndoor\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>hampion, competing in the 60 m),\u00a0<\/span>Rosina Schneider\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(60 m hurdles)\u00a0<\/span>Robin Ganter\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(200 m German I<\/span>ndoor\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>hampion, competing in the 60 m),\u00a0<\/span>Tim Eikermann\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(60 m hurdles) and\u00a0<\/span>Oleg Zernikel\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(pole vault) will be taking part in the world’s biggest indoor athletics meeting. World-class\u00a0<\/span>Paralympic\u00a0<\/span>sprinters such as Paralympic\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>hampion\u00a0Johannes Floors\u00a0<\/b>(Germany) and double\u00a0<\/span>W<\/span>orld champion\u00a0<\/span>Maxcel Amo Manu\u00a0<\/b>(Italy) will also be competing in the Mercedes-Benz Arena for the first time<\/span>.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

As a spectacular encore, fans will experience the fourth edition of the unique discus duel. Discus throwing indoors in front of so many fans is\u00a0<\/span>unique\u00a0<\/span>worldwide at the ISTAF INDOOR in the Mercedes-Benz Arena. Four female discus throwers will compete in direct duels against four male discus throwers in “<\/span>all<\/span>\u00a0against\u00a0<\/span>all<\/span>” mode. Each duel victory in the four rounds is rewarded with two points (defeat: one point). The team with the most points wins. In the three discus duels held so far, the women have triumphed twice and the men’s team has won once. Discus\u00a0<\/span>W<\/span>orld\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>hampion\u00a0<\/span>Kristjan \u010ceh\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(24) will celebrate his premiere at the ISTAF INDOOR Berlin tomorrow in the Mercedes-Benz Arena. In a spectacular discus duel, the 2.06 meter tall giant from Slovenia will compete together with Olympic\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>hampion\u00a0<\/span>Christoph Harting<\/span><\/b>,\u00a0Daniel Jasinski\u00a0<\/b>and German C<\/span>hampion\u00a0<\/span>Henrik Janssen\u00a0<\/span><\/b>against a women’s quartet consisting of Olympic silver medallist\u00a0<\/span>Kristin Pudenz<\/span><\/b>,\u00a0Shanice Craft<\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>Julia Harting\u00a0<\/span><\/b>and\u00a0<\/span>Jorinde van Klinken<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>from the Netherlands.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kristjan \u010c<\/span>eh (24) is an athlete of superlatives: the 2.06-metre\u00a0<\/span>muscle man<\/span>\u00a0with a wingspan of 2.16 meters celebrated the\u00a0<\/span>W<\/span>orld\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>hampionship title in 2022 with a world record (71.13 m), he holds the Slovenian record (71.86 m), six of the ten longest throws in 2023 are to his credit and only three athletes in athletics history have ever thrown further – including his current coach Gerd Kanter from Estonia. Kanter also achieved the greatest distance ever under an indoor roof – 69.51 meters on 22 January 2009 in V<\/span>\u00e4xj\u00f6\u00a0<\/span>(Sweden). As indoor discus competitions can only be held in a few places, Gerd Kanter’s world record is listed as the indoor world best. “I’m delighted that I can compete in my discipline indoors for the first time in my life,” says Kristjan\u00a0<\/span>\u010c<\/span>eh, who also has his eye on his coach’s unofficial world record at his premiere. “That will be interesting. My preparation is going well, I want to throw far in Berlin. And I know that my coach\u00a0<\/span>holds<\/span>\u00a0the record. Let’s see what I can\u00a0<\/span>do<\/span>.”<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n
