ISTAF records, European records, national records: the ISTAF INDOOR in the sold-out Uber Arena turned into a record-breaking show on Friday evening. The 12,100 fans proved their love of athletics with loud support at the world’s biggest indoor meeting on Valentine’s Day. The cheers were deafening when pole vaulter ‘Mondo’ Duplantis flew seemingly weightlessly over 6.10 metres – higher than any other athlete in the long history of the ISTAF. Only the new world record of 6.27 metres was too high for the Swede. In the shot put ring, Olympic champion Yemisi Ogunleye celebrated victory with a world-class distance of 19.42 metres. On the sprint track, German youngster Heiko Gussmann ran to the U23 European record in the 60 metres (6.57 seconds) and a prestigious victory. Marlene Meier rounded off her triumph in the 60 metres hurdles (7.92 sec) with a new best time. Without hurdles, Rebekka Haase (7.26 sec) prevailed, in the men’s hurdles sprint European indoor champion Jason Joseph (Switzerland; 7.63 sec). The fourth German victory on the blue sprint straight was celebrated by Paralympic winner Felix Streng with a new German 60 metre record of 7.03 seconds.
